Planning a Community Tire Collection and Cleanup

· By Stricco International LLC

A tire cleanup involves more than choosing a date. Organizers need a defined collection area, a plan for the material, and clear communication with residents, staff and service providers.

Define the event before promoting it

Set the location, operating hours, eligible participants, accepted tire types and any quantity limits. Identify who will answer questions and what residents should do with tires when they arrive.

Estimate expected volume using prior events or community reports. Share the estimate and site layout with the hauler or receiving facility while planning the event.

Coordinate site flow and safety

Designate vehicle entry and exit routes, a staging area and a staff contact. Keep traffic moving and prevent tires from blocking public access or emergency lanes.

Use clear signs and explain whether mounted tires, mixed debris or unusually large tires can be accepted. Confirm the rules with the service provider ahead of time.

Close out the project with documentation

Record the event date, location and volume collected, then retain manifests, invoices and related approvals. Georgia EPD’s STAR program provides guidance for local-government scrap-tire abatement reimbursement; eligibility and paperwork rules should be checked directly with EPD.
